Do More Than Is Expected of You

Daily Devotional

Matthew 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Get comfortable with the idea of doing more than was asked of you. It will result in an exponential growth in different aspects of your life.

Jesus taught his disciples two head scratching concepts in Matthew 5:39 & 41. In the first He said whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other. The second concept was similar, whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him a second mile. In enunciating these two concepts what Jesus was teaching was the principle of going the extra mile. What Jesus wanted his disciples to grasp, is the idea of giving more than what has been asked of them regardless of whether or not the circumstances were favourable or unfavourable.

For most of us our typical approach to life is to give exactly what is asked of us or just doing what is expected. If you think about it, that mirrors the thinking of doing just enough to get by and that is the mediocre mindset. To embrace the idea of going the extra mile requires a mindset shift that would come with a greater level of success. If you are employed, going the extra mile will position you to be the first to come to the mind of superiors when the next round of promotion comes around. If you are in business, by going the extra mile, customer satisfaction will go through the roof and with it the likelihood that you get referrals. The same will be true if you are in ministry, as the needs of those you serve will be met and their expectations exceeded leading to exponential growth.

Jesus himself practiced the principle of going the extra mile. Throughout His ministry he exceeded the expectations of those he served, going as far as raising the dead on 3 occasions. But he did not stop there, when the people had grown accustomed to him teaching and working miracles, he took his ministry further by exceeding what was expected of him by using the 5 loaves and 2 fishes to feed 5,000 men plus women and children.

You can’t go the extra mile without making significant sacrifices, but in the end the sacrifice will be worth it.

Life Application: Practice giving more than is asked or required of you in every area of your life.

Prayer: Lord, help me to go beyond the bare minimum and go the extra mile. Help me to give my absolute best in situations as I seek to excel in different aspects of my life. In Jesus name, amen.
