Success on God’s Terms

Judges 13:5 – For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

Everybody wants success, but why we often fail is that we want it on our terms – based on what makes us comfortable or not being willing to make the necessary sacrifices. The reality is that it does not work like that. Success comes on His terms. Trying to do it on your terms is effectively leaving him out of the picture. That is a recipe for disaster.

Samson was blessed with extraordinary strength, but he failed to realize his full potential because he wanted to do things on his terms. God had established in Judges 13:5 that even before his birth that he should be a Nazarene from birth to death. A key element of the Nazarene requirement was that no razor should come to his head. Nevertheless, he found himself in the unfortunate state of breaking his Nazarite vow because he ignored one of God’s laws not to pursue strange women.  He did and ended up being deceived by Delilah.

If you think about it, Samson had everything that he needed to be a success, he was strong and more importantly God was with him. God remained with him only as long as he adhered to His terms. The moment his hair was cut, the scripture said in Judges 16:20 that the Lord was not with him as before. The implication was that for Samson, God was no longer in the picture and as long as that persisted he failed miserably. He lost not only his strength, but his sight and in chains he became the play toy of the Philistines.

It is hard pursuing success on your terms. You create headaches for yourself. Align yourself to his terms by doing not only His specific instructions, but also His laws and principles.

Life Application: The word Nazarite means separated one, separate yourself from the crowd and do success on His terms – instructions, laws and principles.

Prayer: Lord, I will follow your instructions and do things on your terms. I surrender everything and consciously choose to adhere to your principles and instructions. In Jesus name, amen.
