Do Everything According to His Will

Daily Devotional

Matthew 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone,

Do not do anything on your accord; always seek the leading of the Holy Spirit. Not only is it sin, but that is how you are prone to make mistakes.

How many times have we heard not to do things according to your will? It is important that we are always reminded because for most of us it is the most common mistake that we make.  The first reason it is important never to forget is because doing things on your accord is a sin. Romans 14:23 confirms this when it says “whatever is not of faith is sin”. What the scripture is saying is that faith is doing things according to his word; therefore, by choosing to do things any other way is a sin. To fully grasp this, consider that in Matthew 4:3 when Satan told Jesus to turn the stone into bread, Satan was not telling Jesus to do anything that is bad like lying or murder. Why then would it have been a sin if Jesus did it? Because he would not be acting according to faith or the word of God: Jesus would have been acting according to his will and that is what would make it a sin. Don’t miss this point, so you can be doing something that seems good, but if it is not consistent with his written or spoken word, then it is sin.

The second reason acting on your accord is not wise is because we belong to God. Romans 14:8 establishes this when it says “whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s”. The real message behind the scripture is that because we belong to God, he is the one that we must seek to honour. You honour him by operating according to His will, doing things in line with your accord is honouring you and not Him. The result of that will be you losing favour with God, when the truth is that you need God’s favour in order  to succeed. God’s promises for your life are bigger than you; you will never be able to do it of your accord. It can only be done through his favour.

Don’t do things according to your will, there is a better way. Allow His Holy Spirit to direct you.

Life Application: Make it a habit to seek his leading prior to making any decision.

Prayer: Lord, I choose to follow you leading and direction. I will do things according to your will and not mine. In Jesus name, amen.
