Let Your Love for God Go Beyond Words

Daily Devotional

Luke 10: 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

It is common for us as Christians to express our love for God, but is it just word? The commandment to love God given by Jesus in St. Luke 10:37 requires us to go beyond words. Your love for God must come with a practical demonstration of that love.

In St. Luke 10:37 Jesus highlighted 4 ways in which we must love God. The first was to love him with all of our heart. Your heart is where your belief system is housed, so the commandment to love Him with all our heart requires us to show our love practically to him by ensuring our beliefs are built upon the laws and principles of God. Therefore, the real proof that you love God with all of your heart is that of keeping His commandments.  That is why the scripture says In John 14:15, if ye love me keep my commandments. Note should be taken of the fact that fulfilling the other 3 requirements hinges on loving God with all our hearts.

The second part of the commandment is to love Him with all our soul. Our soul is our spirit man. The practical demonstration of this is worshiping Him from our spirits coinciding with St. John 4:24 that says they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth. For us to get to worship him in spirit, we have to “present ourselves as living sacrifices” as Romans 12:1 says.

The third requirement to show love to God is to love Him with all of our strength. You do this by giving him your best- the best of your time, the best of resources and the best of your physical body. It coincides with 1 Corinthians 10:31 that says whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. It was simply saying give God your best.

The final requirement in the scripture to love God is to love him with our entire mind.  Loving God with all your mind is to possess the mind of Christ as was stated in 1 Corinthians 2: 16. Having the mind of Christ is not automatic; it requires us to feed our mind a particular diet as was instructed by Philippians 4:8 when it says whatsoever things are true, …honest, …just,…if there be any virtue think on these things.

Live Application: Practically demonstrate your love for God by keeping His commandments, worshipping Him in Spirit and truth, giving him your best and possessing the mind of Christ.

Prayer: Lord, words are meaningless if they are not supported by action. I commit daily to love you with all my heart, soul, strength and mind. In Jesus name, amen.
