Stop Trying to Do it Without the Word

Daily Devotional

Exodus 33:15 “And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.”

Don’t attempt to do anything without the word. Because it is your wisdom, it is what keeps you from going off track.

When David said thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path in Psalms 119:5 the main message he was communicating was what that he could not do without the word of God. The same was true of Moses when he said to God in Exodus 33: 15 “If you will not go with us, then cause us not go from this place”. God not going with them ultimately meant an absence of His word. The most critical loss that we have to contend with if His presence is not with us is an absence of His word.  Moses and the people of Israel could not afford that; all their successes could be traced back to a word from God. How could they make a step forward without it?

The utterances of David and Moses stand as important reminders that you cannot make it without the word of God, never lose sight of that. Because you cannot make it without the word of God, the following 2 responses are required of you. Firstly, ascribe to the word of God the level of importance that it deserves. Job’s response was to place greater value on his word than the food he ate evidenced by Job 23:12 where he said I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. The second response is to get more of His words. If you cannot make it without the word of God, the only logical thing to do is to get deeper in the word. Paul said all things I count but loss “that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings” (Philippians 3:10). Paul took the decision to deny himself of things that were previously important for a deeper knowledge of the word.

Keep reminding yourself every day that you cannot make it without the word of God: that alone will change your attitude to life.

Life Application: Start a habit to spend some extra minute’s daily reading and studying the word of God.

Prayer: Lord, your word instructs and guides. I therefore can do nothing without your word. Help me to seek your word ano directions daily. In Jesus name, amen.
