John 14:1-14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In response to the trying times that the world is facing, don’t let your fears drive you, but rather let your faith guide you.

With the advent of COVID-19, there is no doubt that we are living in troublesome times. Approximately 4.8 million people worldwide have already died from the Virus plus those who have had to deal with significant health scares. Unemployment has also risen and with that poverty levels have also increased. The International Labor Organization (ILO) expects that over the next year 200 million people will be out of work as a result of the pandemic. The ILO also noted that all the gains made since 2015 to reduce world poverty have been totally eroded as a result of the pandemic. Without doubt these are troubling times.

How should we as believers respond to times like these? Jesus knew that days like these would come and so he gave his disciples advance notice as to what their response should be. He said in St. John 14:1 “let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me”. The first thing that Jesus said was let not your heart be troubled. Our natural response as humans to troubling circumstances is to be fearful. Nevertheless, fear is a choice; Jesus was telling his disciples to make the choice not to be fearful when they faced troubling times. The problem with fear is that any time that you make a decision out of fear you have made a decision to step outside of the will of God. That is creating trouble for yourself: but It is what fear does, it adds trouble to trouble thus making the matter worse. Jesus therefore did not stop at just telling them not to be fearful in the second part of the instruction, he gave them the antidote to making decisions based on fear – He said “believe in God”, which means have faith. Believing in God is doing what the word of God says regardless of how the circumstance may look.  Let believing in God be how you choose to respond in this time and if God has not said anything, don’t do anything.

The right response to troubling times like these is to do what God’s word says and if you are uncertain about what to do next, wait on his direction.

Life Application: Choose to respond by faith by sticking to what God’s word says.

Prayer: Lord, these are indeed trying times. Many people are out of a job. Many people are dying. Many are struggling financially, emotionally and spiritually. But I pray right now in the name of Jesus that we will stand on your word and trust that you are able to keep us and provide for us and you have promised, amen.
