No Longer a Slave to Fear

Daily Devotional

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

You do not have to be a slave to fear. It can be overcome by perfecting your love for God evidenced by consistently choosing to do what the word of God says as opposed to what your fear says.

The number one weapon that the enemy uses against the people of God is fear. As long as the enemy can keep you in a place of fear, he can keep you from the promises God made. What fear does is that it keeps you from doing the word of God, which is the very thing that is needed to give you victory over your circumstances. 1 Samuel 13, it was fear that caused Saul to choose to run ahead and perform the burnt offering himself prior to Samuel, the high priest arriving. He was afraid that the Philistines would attack Israel and find them unprepared. The circumstance of Saul is not unique, very often our decision to do contrary to the word of God is rooted in fear.

1 John 4:18 gives us the solution to break the hold of fear in our lives{ it says perfect love casteth out fear. The perfect love it is alluding to is the perfect love of God. As we have established before, loving God is keeping his commandments. Therefore, the perfect love of God is evidenced by consistently, day in day out, keeping His commandments. When you are doing that you are operating in faith and there is no place for fear. So what the scripture was communicating was that you can break fear by creating a habit of consistently keeping the commandments of God. Do not make the mistake of thinking that by overcoming your fears today you will not have to deal with them again tomorrow. Pay attention to the fact the scripture uses the phrase “perfect love casteth out fear”. The use of the word “casteth” suggests that it is something that you have to continuously do. It is a decision that you will have to make daily because the enemy will never stop attacking you with fears. But with a perfect love for God, it will allow you to consistently choose your faith over your fears.

Life Application: Develop a deeper love for God to the point where you consistently choose to live the word of God over your fears.

Prayer: Lord, I choose to walk in faith and not fear because you have not given me a spirit of fear, but of love and of power and a sound mind. I rest in your perfect love for me and reject fear in Jesus name, amen.
