Be an Encourager to Someone

Daily Devotional

Isaiah 34:3 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.4 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you.

Rather than criticize, provide the push that person needs to get to his/her next level by offering a word of encouragement.

One kind word of encouragement from you to someone in your environment could be the push they need to make something great of their life. When Hamaan, because of his pride, refused to go wash in the Jordan River, it was the encouragement from his servants, who had told him about the prophet Elisha, that became the impetus behind him making the decision to do as he was told to get his healing in 2 Kings 5:13. Even the greatest amongst us need a little push. Consider the fact that it was a nudge from Jesus’ mother that propelled Him to His first miracle at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, as far as He was concerned, his hour had not yet come according to John 2:4.

In instructing us to be an “encourager”, Isaiah 34:3 tells us to strengthen the weak hands and confirm the feeble needs. A word of encouragement could strengthen the weak hands of someone else by driving the person to take action that they would not have otherwise taken. It also  could confirm their feeble knees by providing the confidence they need to step out into the unknown. Isaiah did not only tell us  why we should be an “encourager”, he also gave insight as to how we should go about doing so in Isaiah 34:5. His instruction had two elements. The first is to help those we seek to encourage to take their eyes off their fears and all limitations that they put on themselves. The second element is to help them to rebuild their strength and confidence and by putting their faith in what God is able to do.

Life Application: Help someone in your environment get to where they should be by offering a word of encouragement.

Prayer: Lord, sometimes we focus so much on ourselves and our issues that we forget to encourage others around us. Give us the right words to encourage those who are downtrodden, weak, hurting and in need of encouragement. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
