Ephesians 4: 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Your harvest is not just for you; share a portion with those who are in need.

The first thing that Ephesians 4:28 says is let him that stole, steal no more. What is implied by that is you should earn an honest bread; that is do not get involved in anything that is untoward or unlawful by “working with your hands in things which are good”.   Having earned an honest bread, the scripture provided additional guidance to say that part of the purpose of earning an honest living is to be able to give to those in need. That breaks rank with the thinking that some have to keep all that they have earned for themselves. The principle being put forward by Paul was also taught by God to the Children of Israel in Leviticus 23:22. He told them that when they reap the harvest of their land, they should not reap everything but leave some behind for the poor and the foreigner among them. The essence of the instruction was to share a portion of their harvest with those in need.

As the scripture instructs, giving a portion of your harvest is not something that you want to ignore. The reason that is important is that if you do, God will not leave you unrewarded. Proverbs 19:17 highlights this truth; it says he that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD. What the scripture was communicating was that God sees you sharing your harvest with the needy as you lending to Him. He regards it as a loan to Him to highlight to you that you can be sure that you will be repaid and we know that when God gives back to us he does not give you the same that you gave; he gives back in multiples of that. Don’t be hesitant to share your harvest with someone who is in need, God is your great rewarder.

Out of a heart of love share your harvest with someone who is in need, but know that God is faithful to do what he has promised.

Life Application: Set aside a proportion of your income weekly/monthly to give to someone that you have identified that is in need.

Prayer: Lord, help me to identify those who are in need and give a portion of what you have blessed me with.
