Practice Pure Religion

Daily Devotional

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

To practice pure religion you have to make it about serving people and living by the word of God.

You may have heard persons say in the past that they do not like religion; however, the truth is that there is nothing wrong with religion, the problem is with how it is practiced. The religion that we sometimes portray is not always pure and that creates a problem. James sought to redirect the church to the practice of pure religion the way that Jesus taught it. He said In James 1:27 that “pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world”. Pure religion as James described it had two components. The first is to love people as evident by him saying “to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction. It is notable here that James’ characterization of pure religion is that it is really about serving people. The message behind that is that for us to practice pure religion we must make serving people the focus of our lives, ministry and churches; that was the model of Jesus.

The second component of pure religion that James identified was that of keeping oneself unspotted from the world. What that communicates is that the practice of pure religion also involves living completely by the word God. We cannot practice pure religion and live by our standard; we have to live by God’s standard. That is an area in which we often falter.

The objective of practicing pure religion is for our lives to mirror Christ; that requires us to love people the way He did and do what his word says.  If these do not reflect your current practice of religion, use it as an opportunity to get to that level.

Life Application: Practice pure religion by aligning all your actions and habits to the word of God and through love serve the needs of others.

Prayer: Lord, help me to abide by your word to practice pure religion. One in which I serve you and others. In Jesus name, amen.
