Elevate God above Your Fears

Daily Devotional

1 Kings 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Experiencing victory or defeat is determined by what or who you choose to magnify. Elevating your fears will only lead to failure; it is by elevating God that you enjoy victory and peace.

During Elijah’s episode of fear as he was fleeing for his life, he came to a cave and God asked him what he was doing there? He told God that he had been fearful for his life, but the Children of Israel had forsaken his covenant and slain his prophets and now he was the only one that is left and the people seek to take his life. In response God told him to go stand upon the mount. To overcome his fears Elijah had to reposition himself at a place where he could hear faith by hearing the word of God and that was what standing on the mount did for him.

The scripture said in 1 Kings 19:11-12 that the Lord passed by the mount that Elijah was standing on in a strong wind, earthquake and fire, but that was not how God spoke to Elijah. He spoke to him with a still small voice. One of the purposes of the wind, earthquake and fire was to resize how Elijah saw God. Fear had dominated him because he had elevated his fears above God. It was now time for him to elevate God above his fears, so God used the elements to remind him that Jezebel or nothing else was any match to his great power, so there was no need to fear. The elements served as a reminder to Elijah of how God had wrought miracles among his people in the past. For instance he had recently rained down fire on the altar for Elijah and at the Red Sea he had used a strong wind to part the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21). Never forget that God is bigger than your circumstances.

So many times you and I have been guilty of making God too small. Today is a good time to remind yourself that nothing or no one is greater than our God. Therefore, rather than allowing yourself to be fearful, put your faith and confidence in him.

Life Application:  Continually replay in your mind how God had manifested himself in your life, it will keep you believing your faith and not your fears.

Prayer: Lord, thanks for the reminder through your word that you are bigger than my circumstances. I will therefore trust you and not fear. In Jesus name, amen.
