John 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Do not expect God to do things the same way he did it the last time; that is putting God in a box. Instead seek fresh direction for everything that you must do.
When God told Elijah to meet him on the mount in 1 Kings 19, the scripture was deliberate in suggesting that the voice of God was not heard either in the strong wind, earthquake or fire, but instead God spoke to Elijah in a still small voice. Why was highlighting that important? Because in Exodus 19 and 20 the scriptures records that God spoke to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai through fire, quaking and thundering and lightning, therefore, it was likely that Elijah expected that God would have spoken to him through the elements he experienced on the mount, but instead God chose to speak in a still small voice. The lesson that was being taught was not to put God in a box: not because he moved or spoke in a particular way in the past means that is how he will always do it. It is not in the nature of God to always do things the same way. Being led by the Spirit, God expects us to operate in the same way.
In John 3:8 Jesus told Nicodemus that the wind, representing the spirit of God bloweth where it listeth (wishes) and thou hearest the sound thereof. What this section of the scripture was saying was that when the Spirit moves, you will know that he is moving as his impact will always be heard and/or felt. The scripture continues to speak about the Spirit of God to say,”but you cannot tell from where it will come from or where it will go; so is everyone that is born of the Spirit.” The later portion of the scripture was highlighting the same principle taught in 1 Kings 19:11-12 that you cannot predict the movement of the Spirit of God, so you should not try to put Him in a box. In addition, since you are born of the Spirit and; therefore, possess the nature of his Spirit, you too should not operate in a box. How you move should not be based on tradition or rituals; but instead you should move as the Spirit moves. Being born of the Spirit, seek to ensure that you are always led by the Spirit.
Life Application: In the same way that David sought fresh direction for every battle; seek the leading of the Holy Spirit in all your affairs.
Prayer: Lord, help me to never put you in a box, but to know you more. In Jesus name, amen.
