Make God Your One Desire

Daily Devotional

Psalms 27:4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.

Elevate God to the place where His presence is more important to you than anything else. It is from being his presence that you draw the strength and wisdom you need to live victoriously.

For most of us there are several things that we would like the Lord to do for us: depending on the circumstances of your life, it may be: house, car, financial breakthrough, spouse, and healing just to name a few. If we are to be honest, not only is it likely for us to have multiple desires, but the thing that we want the most is likely to be physical in nature. While nothing is wrong with that; David was of a different mind, he said in Psalms 27:4 that the one thing that he desired of the Lord was that he may dwell in the house of the Lord or presence of the Lord all the days of his life. It is notable that David said “one thing have I desired’. It connotes the idea that this desire was not something that just emerged but has been with him ever since he came to know himself. Additionally, the fact that dwelling in God’s presence was the one thing that he desired, it was therefore more important to him than anything else in the world.

David did not only state what his most important thing was, he articulated two reasons why it was so. The first reason that he put forward was to behold the beauty of the Lord; meaning experiencing God at another level. As was the case for Moses, for him to experience God at another level and see His glory he had to go up to the mountain top and get into His presence. Dwelling in God’s presence allows us to experience Him in ways we have never experienced Him before. The second reason why dwelling in God’s presence was his one desire was so that he could enquire of the Lord to gain direction for his life and for engaging in warfare. The only place that God is guaranteed to speak is when we are in His presence. And that was something that David clearly understood.

Like David, get to the place where dwelling in God’s presence is your one desire: all that you need is in Him.

Life Application: Pray for a hunger and thirst for God until His presence becomes your most important thing.

Prayer: Lord, you are my one desire. I am nothing without you. Give me more of your presence I pray, In Jesus name, amen.
