2 Peter 1:5-8 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
What you now produce, physically or spiritually, is a function of the stage that you are at. You cannot stay at the same stage and produce; you have to go to a new stage.
God does not expect you and I to remain stuck at the same place. That was the central message 2 Peter 1:5-8. It instructs us to add to our faith 6 other spiritual character traits: virtue; knowledge; temperance (self-control); patience; godliness; brotherly kindness; and, charity (love). Through careful observation you will realize that the spiritual characteristics are progressive; thereby pointing us to new stages. Our relationship with God begins with faith; according to Ephesians 2:8 by grace are ye saved through faith. From faith the next stage is virtue (a change of mindset or repentance). Thereafter we must become knowledgeable about the word of God. It is that knowledge of His word that shapes the character traits of self-control, patience, brotherly kindness and love. Love was the last spiritual characteristic mentioned because the ultimate objective of the work that God does in us is to get us to the stage where our love for God and people is perfected. Truly loving God and people are the prerequisites for consistently keeping his commandments. Therefore, you must keep growing in your love relationship with God.
We were created to grow and increase so being stuck at the same stage will only result in you being unfulfilled and frustrated. 2 Peter 1:8 tells us why it is important not to stay stuck at the same stage: because, if you do, you will find yourself being barren and unfruitful in your walk with Christ. The essence of the point is that unless you rise to new stages, you will fail to produce that which was intended. It is for this reason the scripture implores us in verse 5 to give all diligence to adding the 6 spiritual characteristics mentioned. What it was communicating was that they are too important to prevent barrenness for us not to give maximum effort to ensure that the character traits stated are mentioned.
If you desire to produce more, you will have to go through the process. A key element of that is to expand your knowledge of the word of God so that the other character traits can be added.
Life Application: Deepen your knowledge of the word of God by spending more time studying the word of God and then exemplify the character traits stated in 2 Peter 1:5-7 exactly as the scriptures prescribes.
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to be stuck at one stage in my spiritual journey. Help me to strive for more by developing the requisite character traits. In Jesus name, amen.
