James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Live every day with an expectation of God’s goodness. Your circumstance may change, but because He is the same today as he was yesterday, you can be assured of His goodness.
James 1:17 refers to God as the Father of Lights to highlight that He is the source of all goodness. In addition to that the scripture points out two characteristics of God as the Father of Lights. The first characteristic is that in God there is no variableness. What that means is that God’s goodness is not going to be less or more on any given day. His goodness changeth not. Depending on the watt of the bulb that you are using, the light may be bright or dim at any given time, but there is no variability in the goodness of God. The same that he was yesterday is the same he will be forever. Given that truth, you should respond by expecting God to be good every day.
The second characteristic that the scripture mentioned about God as the Father of Lights is that there is no shadow of turning. No shadow of turning communicates that there is no shifting of lights. If you project a flashlight on an object, the shadow that emanates will grow shorter or longer depending on the angle from which the light is projected. With God there is none of that: His light or goodness does not project from different angles, it is always from above. What that says is that God’s light or goodness will always flow in your life from the same angle. He is consistent, so your response should be to stay positioned where God’s goodness is flowing.
Light Application: Expect God’s goodness to flow in your life today regardless of your circumstance.
Prayer: Lord, you are good and your mercy is forever. I trust you Lord and I believe your word that surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. In Jesus name, amen.
