1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: You are no longer in darkness.

As light, it is your responsibility to reflect righteousness by doing only that which is good for the purpose of bringing glory to God.

Prior to the coming of Jesus, the world was in spiritual darkness; the work that He did on the cross changed all that.  Notwithstanding this truth, there were some believers in the days of John who were operating as if they were still in darkness. In an attempt to help them change that, the first thing that Peter did was to help them get the right perspective of God. He reminded them that God is light. God is both physical light and spiritual light. He revealed himself as physical light in creation by being the light prior to the sun or moon being brought into existence.  As the spiritual light no unrighteousness can be found in Him.

Having established who God is, John’s next step was to remind the believers who they are in God. He brought to their attention that as believers they have fellowship with God. That means that we have the nature of God. So he concluded by saying “if we say we have fellowship with God and walk in darkness we speak not the truth.”  The key point that John wanted to communicate was that since we have the nature of the Light, God expects us to be light even as He is light. Jesus communicated that expectation in Matthew 5:14 when he said “ye are the light of the world”. As the light of the world, reflect God by letting people see righteousness in you and not darkness. It is by doing this that others will see your good works and be led to glorify our Father who is in heaven. Ultimately, being the light in your world will bring God glory.

Life Application: Be consistent in doing what is righteous.

Prayer: Lord, you are the light of the world and have commanded those who are in you to reflect that same light. Help me light the world around me by being just like you. In Jesus name, amen.
