Master Your Feelings

Daily Devotional

Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

If you follow how you feel you will get nothing done. Learn to do what you should do when you should do it, regardless of how you feel.

The greatest distraction that you will have to deal with is your feelings. Think about it, what is the primary factor that would cause you not to pray or take action towards a particular goal? Isn’t it that you do not feel like it?  In most cases if you follow how you feel, you will not get anything done.  In 2 Samuel 11:1 David never went out to war when the Kings typically go out to war, because he did not feel like it, and Look at what happened: he ended up committing adultery and murder. What you can learn from his experience is that if you fail to master your feelings, it will ultimately lead you down a destructive path.

Distractions will come from external sources, but it will not be the major cause of it. To get those things done that you need to get done, you will have to get to the stage where you make yourself do it regardless of how you feel. That is how the greats get things done. Do not believe for one minute that Daniel prayed 3 times a day without instances where he never felt like it. Larry Bird too, who is noted as having the discipline to shoot 500 free throws per day prior to breakfast, would have had his moments when that was the last thing he would have wanted to be doing, but he did it nonetheless. Both Daniel and Larry Bird got the job done regardless of how they felt at times by doing what Proverbs 25:28 says – ruling over their own Spirit. Not doing so is like a city without walls in the sense that you will find yourself doing everything else except what you should be doing.

Don’t let your feelings distract you, develop the discipline to do what you must do when it should be done.

Life Application:  Set a schedule daily to do what you should do when and follow through with it despite how you might be feeling.

Prayer: Lord, keep me focused so that I will not allow my feelings to dictate my actions. In Jesus name, amen.
