Do Not Accept Anything that Is Not From God

Daily Devotional

Genesis 21:10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

Not everything that you receive is from God; that includes friendship, solutions, opportunities, partnerships or even your thoughts. We know that this is true because James 1:17 says every good gift comes from above. Implicit in that is that gifts that are not good come from elsewhere. If you mistakenly receive those gifts then what will ensue is pain, misery and failure.  Simply put, you cannot afford to accept anything that is not from God.

Sarah, having to deal with the fact that she was barren and well stricken in age received a solution that was not from God. She convinced her husband to marry her maid, Hagar, for her to produce a child on her behalf. After Hagar conceived she started to disrespect Sarah, probably thinking that she was above Sarah because she could conceive and Sarah could not. She had to be sent away and only returned because the angel of the Lord told her to go back and submit to Sarah. The trouble did not stop there however, as at the feast of the weaning of Isaac (Sarah’s miracle), Ishmael (the son that Abraham had with Hagar) was seen mocking Isaac. Although Hagar was immediately sent away with Ishmael, that marked the beginning of a rivalry between brothers that we see even today being played out in the middle east.

Other Bible characters were guilty of making a similar mistake that Sarah did. Moses at the age of 40 also acted out a solution that was not from God by killing an Egyptian which resulted in him being 40 years in the wilderness. Another example is Samson , who accepted a female companion in Delilah who was not from God and his life was cut short. Making such a mistake can be deadly, so you can’t afford to make those mistakes. The only way that you can avoid making such a mistake is to seek God concerning every decision and spend more time in his presence to become more sensitive to his leading.

Life Application: Avoid costly life altering decisions by seeking God concerning every decision and become more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, help me to discern what is from you and what was sent in my life to destroy me. Help me to walk in obedience to your word to receive all that you have in store for my life. In Jesus name, amen.
