Use Your God Given Power and Authority

Bible Verse

Exodus 17:11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

Luke 10:19 tells us that God has given us power to defeat all forces of evil and every power of the enemy; the only way to gain the victory over your circumstances is to use your God given power and authority.

By using his God given power and authority Moses and the Children of Israel overcame the enemy in Exodus 17.   As the Children of Israel traversed through the wilderness, less than 3 months after they came out of the land of Egypt, the Amalekites came to fight against them at Rephidim. Moses prescribed a two pronged approach to overcome the enemy. First, Joshua would choose able men with whom he would go out and physically fight with the Amalekites. While that was being done Moses’ responsibility was to hold up the rod of God, with the assistance of Aaron and Hur. The rod, which represents divine power and authority, was repeatedly used by Moses up to that point to manifest the power of God while they were in Egypt and thereafter in the wilderness, What happened during the battle with Amalek was that when Moses held up his hand with the rod of God, Israel prevailed, but when he let down his hand the enemy would have the upper hand. The moral of the story is that the only time that the devices of the enemy against our lives can advance is when we do not use  our God given power or authority.

There are two things that the scripture teaches about using your God given power and authority. First, the Children of Israel were at Rephidim, a resting place. The message behind that is that to use your God given power and authority you must first dwell at the resting place or abide in God’s presence. Never forget that there is no power or authority without Him being present. That is evident in Luke 5:17 where it records that Jesus healed the sick because “the power of the Lord was present to heal them”. The second thing that we can learn from the scripture about using your God given power and authority is that we should walk with “an Aaron and Hur” to hold up your hand when we get weak. Being human, there will be times in your life when your hands grow tired and heavy, you will need some spiritual people like Aaron and Hur who will go with you to the top of the hill (high places in God) and bear you up when you grow weak. Without the help of Aaron and Hur, quite likely Israel would have lost the battle, and the reason would have been because Moses would not have provided for himself the support mechanism to help him overcome his time of weakness.

Life Application

Use your God given power and authority by making His presence your resting place and surround yourself with spiritual men or women who can hold up your hand if you grow weak.

Lord, help me to dwell daily in your presence and use the power and authority you have given me. Also, surround me with the right people who will lift me when I’m at my weakest moments. In Jesus name, amen.
