Seek God First, Not things

Daily Devotional

Bible Verse:

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The secret to attracting the harvest that you want is to seek God’s presence first and adhere to his principles. If you do otherwise, the most likely outcome is that you will miss your harvest.

Matthew 6:33 starts by saying seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness. The “Kingdom of God” mentioned here in the scripture represents the presence of God and the “His righteousness” alludes to His principles. Therefore, the essence of the instruction to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” is to make the presence of God and His principles the centre of our lives.

In other words, make God’s presence and principles the foundation of all we do. The alternative to centering our lives around the presence of Jesus and His principles is to seek after things. Seeking after things is synonymous with not planting the requisite seeds but expecting the harvest. That approach will leave you frustrated because as long as the necessary seeds have not been planted, there can be no harvest.

The reality is that the seed that must be planted will vary depending on the harvest that you want to see. However, whatever that harvest is that you want, the principles or seeds that you must honour can be found in scriptures. Search them out and build your action plan around them while staying connected to Jesus; that is how you will see the harvest you are looking for.

David had several great accomplishments including defeating Goliath, becoming King of Israel and the distinction of never losing a battle. He never got there seeking things first. To the contrary, the David that we saw in the scriptures honoured biblical principles and constantly sought the presence of God for divine direction. Follow his example to seek God first and those things that you desire will be added unto you.

Life Application:

Build your planned accomplishments around abiding in God’s presence and adhering to Biblical principles that relate to the harvest you want to see.

Prayer:

Lord, I will seek you first because you are the source of all that is good. I look to you, the author and finisher of my faith. I will seek you and not things. I seek your face above all. In Jesus name, amen.
