Joshua 3:3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. 4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.
Do not make it a practice to wait for the last minute to seek God’s direction. Seek His direction well in advance because as an overcomer that best positions you to receive clarity as it relates to the strategy you must employ to get the results that you desire.
Giving yourself sufficient time to seek God is positioning yourself to become more effective as an overcomer. Three days after the Children of Israel were lodging beside the Jordan River, they still did not know how they would cross over, but they were determined that the Jordan would not keep them from their promised land. They were expecting to hear from God what they should do, so Joshua and elders instructed the Children of Israel in advance that when they see the priest bearing the Ark of the Covenant, which represents the presence of God they should follow after them. In addition to that, the people were further told that they should follow the Ark of the Covenant from a distance of 2,000 cubits or 3,000 feet. The instruction given to Joshua and the elders were indicative of two principles to be followed to live as an overcomer.
By telling the Children of Israel to follow the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant the principle being taught is to let the Lord lead. What they were effectively telling the people was to go where the presence of God goes. It is similar to the mandate that was given in Galatians 5:16 when it says walk in the spirit that ye do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. The reason this is important is that when the Lord leads, you cannot fail. The second portion of the instruction was to follow the presence of God from a distance. The reason given to the Israelites why this should be their modus operandi is so that they would know where to go. The takeaway from that instruction for us is that in allowing God to lead, we must practice seeking God well in advance. Sometimes we are guilty of waiting for the last minute before we start seeking God. And because it is so close to the time that the decision has to be made, we end up praying about the matter but failing to seek God sufficiently to be able to get a clear direction. It is important to practice seeking God in advance because there is no way to guarantee that the same day that you pray about a matter you will get the answer you need. It could come after several days. Additionally, sometimes the answer comes in pieces.
As an overcomer you cannot go into battle without the right strategy. The only way to possess that is to give yourself sufficient time to seek God concerning any matter.
Proactively seek God days, weeks and months in advance of major decisions to ensure that you have sufficient clarity to make the right decision.
Lord, early will I seek you in all things. I will not move until you give your directions. Lead me and guide me into all truth. In Jesus name, amen.
