Bible Verse:

Joshua 5:2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

Don’t believe that you can operate anyway you like and possess the promises of God; they typically come with conditions or responsibilities. You can be sure that God will keep His end of the bargain, make sure you fulfill yours.

After successfully crossing the Jordan River, but before the Children of Israel possessed their promised land, God instructed Joshua to circumcise the Israelites who were born in the wilderness who remained uncircumcised. The practice of the circumcision of the Israelites started in Genesis 17. At that time God made a covenant or agreement with Abraham that he would make him a father of many nations and give to his seed the land of Canaan as a possession.

One element of the covenant was a promise from God, but it also entailed a requirement for Abraham to fulfill. Abraham’s responsibility was to ensure that every male in his household, whether a son or slave, should be circumcised from the time they are eight days old and this practice should be carried out throughout all future generations. Abraham and his seed after him, kept their end of the bargain except during the 40 years in the wilderness. So as to teach the Israelites and us that we must fulfill our end of the bargain, God did not allow the Children of Israel to possess Promised land without first being circumcised, hence he instructed Joshua to circumcise those that were uncircumcised.

The children of Israel had to fulfill their responsibility before they possessed their promised land. Whatever the promise that God made concerning your life, the same will be required of you. For you the responsibility or condition may be a special requirement like the practice of circumcision given to the Israelites or the Nazarene vow Samson had to adhere to. Additionally, obeying the word is definitely a requirement that you must fulfill as it was required of all Bible characters. Now that you understand that the promises of God come with responsibility, make sure you fulfill your end of the bargain. Whatever it is that could hinder you from keeping your end of the bargain, is not worth it.

Life Application:

Remind yourself of what God had promised concerning your life and list the specific instructions and Biblical principles applicable to that promise and make sure you do them.

Lord, very often we remind you of your promise, but forget to remind ourselves that we have to keep our promises and what you have asked of us to do. May we never neglect our part and honor you in all that we do. In Jesus name, amen.
