Shape the Future of the Next Generation

Daily Devotional

Bible Verse:

Joshua 11:15 As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.

What future generations do will depend on what they have been taught; they will do what you have taught them if your influence is greater than the other sources of knowledge that are in the world.

One of Joshua’s habits was to not leave a single word of the Lord undone. That was evident not only at Jordan and Jericho, but also in the execution of other battles that the Children of Israel were involved in. Joshua did not operate in this way because he was born with good genes. He left none of the word of God undone because that was what he was taught by Moses. The scripture said in Joshua 11:15 that as the Lord commanded Moses, so did Moses command Joshua and so did Joshua. What the scripture revealed is that Moses, even after his death, helped to shape the future of Israel through what he taught.

What you choose to teach will help determine what future generations become. There were two ways in which Moses shaped the next generation. First, he repeatedly taught the word of God to the next generation of Israelites. The book of Deuteronomy is an example of that as by then all of the old generation had passed on. The second thing that Moses did was to engage in one on one teaching or mentoring of Joshua who would be the next generation leader. Since the direction of an organization depends heavily on the leader, it was not enough for Moses to teach the congregation, he had to spend time raising up a next generation leader who shared his beliefs. Through relationship, Moses had great influence over Joshua so he did not vary from what he was taught by Moses.

Life Application:

Do your bit to change the direction that the next generation is going in. Start where you are in your homes, communities, workplaces and church environment by repeatedly teaching the word of God to all concerned and identify and build relationships with future leaders who you can pour into within small group settings.

Lord, the experiences and wisdom you have given me are not just for me. Provide opportunities for me to impart to younger generations who will need to hear them so that they can shape lives in the way you have designed. In Jesus name, amen.
