Bible Verse:

Joshua 2:1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

Why would God instruct Moses to send 12 spies to spy out the land of Canaan for 40 days in Numbers 12? Given that the land was already promised to them for a possession, why would that be necessary? The primary reason for the instruction was to teach the Children of Israel the principle of gathering adequate information to help inform strategy as to how best they could possess what God has promised.

Gathering adequate information is important as it helps to minimize the chances of making a mistake. Joshua having learnt and understood this principle when God taught it previously used it to good effect during the time of his leadership. Joshua 2:1 tells us that Joshua sent two men to secretly spy out Jericho. Although the 12 spies would have previously gathered information on all of the land of Canaan including Jericho, However, that was 40 years ago and a lot could have changed during that time.

Therefore, information previously gathered needed to be updated for better decision making. When the men returned they reported to Joshua that surely the Lord had delivered Jericho into their hands because the people of Jericho were in fear because of them. Because they took the time to gather information about Jericho, the people of Israel were more assured of victory as they were able to identify the key weakness of the enemy.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that because God has made promises concerning your life, you do not need to spy out your land. The fact that this was a principle that God instructed Moses to follow means that he expects you to do likewise. There are two reasons for bad decisions, inadequate information or possessing beliefs that are contrary to the word of God. The 10 spies made a bad decision because of the latter. You can minimize your chances of making bad decisions on your journey to your promised land by gathering adequate information about the area or field in which the Lord has promised you success. It is a universal principle that is used today by top companies across the world to help maintain dominance in their industry.

Life Application:

Invest time and resources to repeatedly gather information to make better decisions on your journey to your promised land.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to operate with wisdom in all my decision making. Give me the right perspective on things. In Jesus name, amen.

  1. Amen 🙏🏾. I also wonder why Joshua sent two and not twelve like Moses? I wonder if his experience had anything to do with it? Of the twelve, only two brought back a good report, while the evil report of the other ten made the people fear. Interesting how God strategically uses numbers for symbolism.
