Bible Verse:

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord…And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

You were not anointed just for you to say that you are filled with the Holy Ghost. You were anointed for a purpose. To communicate that He was anointed for a purpose, Jesus repeated the prophetic words of Isaiah concerning Him in Luke 4:18-19 saying that “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me”. That was his mission statement. Note the use of the word “because” in the scripture; it was put there to show that Jesus was stating the reason he was filled with the Holy Ghost. It was not just to be an example to us that we too should be filled with the Holy Ghost. The primary purpose of His anointing was to function in the purposes for which He was sent to earth.

There are 2 things that Luke 4:18-21 teaches us. The first is that we must know the purpose for which we have been anointed in the same way that Jesus was able to articulate the purpose for His anointing. If you have not yet identified the purpose of your anointing, I suggest a combination of two approaches; the first is to ask God to reveal the purpose(s) for your anointing. Since he called you, it is best to get from Him the purpose for which He called you.

The second approach is to take stock of what God has deposited in you by looking at the five (5) areas mentioned by Rick Warren in his book, “The Purpose Driven Life”. The five areas are:

1. Your spiritual gifts

2. Your heart or what you are passionate about;

3. Your ability or greatest strengths.

4. Your personality

5. Your experiences or where you have been.

In the same way that there was more than one purpose to Jesus’ anointing, the same could be true concerning you. The second thing that scripture teaches is to fulfill the purpose(s) for which you have been anointed. Jesus said to those present “this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears”. Jesus said that because he lived his purpose every day and so should you.

Life Application:

Identify the purpose for which you have been anointed and live it out every day.

Prayer:

Lord, reveal the purpose of my anointing and empower me to walk according to that purpose daily. In Jesus name, amen.
