Luke 5:17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
Being anointed is important, but not enough to be effective in ministry. Luke 5:17 tells us that while Jesus was teaching on a certain day “the power of the Lord was present to heal”. That allowed him to heal the man who was paralyzed and lying on a bed who was brought to Him by his four friends. Why was it necessary for the scripture to point out that the “power of the Lord was present to heal”? To teach us that we need more than the anointing to do ministry: even though you may be anointed, you need the Spirit of the Lord or the presence of God to be present to effectively carry out what you were anointed to do.
The point is that although you may be anointed, you cannot do ministry in your own strength; you need the strength of God to execute. Samson was anointed but when the Spirit of God departed from him he lost all his strength. Jesus understood this well and so in doing his many miracles, he did not make a move unless the Spirit of God was present.
You need the Spirit of God to be present to be effective in ministry. How did Jesus stay close to the Spirit of God to be effective in His ministry? Luke 5:16 tells us that “he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed”. What this shows is that one of the approaches taken by Jesus to stay close to the Spirit of God was to spend quality time alone in prayer. This was not a one off thing that Jesus did only because he was going to minister; it was His lifestyle. Throughout the scriptures, time alone in prayer was a regular practice for Him. Emulate what Jesus did by spending quality time alone in prayer. Make it a lifestyle as it will most certainly enhance your effectiveness when called upon to do ministry.
Make spending quality time alone in prayer not just something that you do prior to ministry, but a lifestyle. Both are required.
Lord, I know you have anointed me for ministry but I can’t do anything without your presence and power. Fill me with your power and let me dwell in your presence daily. In Jesus name, amen.
