The second way to make a difference in your world that was mentioned the last time was to help to create change in the life of others by using your gifts, talents and resources to live out your purpose. That was one way in which Jesus expected us to be the salt of the earth.
Way 3 – Give Light to the Dark World
Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid…Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Being the salt of the earth is a good thing, but God wants you to be more than that. To that end Jesus said “ye are the light of the world” this was said immediately after charging his disciples to be salt in the earth. Why was that so? He wanted them to know that they should not stop at being the salt of the earth; they should be the light of the world as well. The reason it is not enough for us to be salt is that the world is in darkness and salt cannot remove darkness; it takes light to do that. As light of the world, God does not expect us to be any ordinary light. He has high standards. To emphasize this requirement, He stated that “a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid”. What Jesus was saying was that in the same way that a city on a hill can be seen from far away, so must our light shine brightly so that it is visible even from a distance.
Make a difference in the world by letting your light shine. The question you may ask is how can I do that? Jesus gave the answer when he said In Matthew 5:16 “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”. What the scripture was saying was to let your light shine by presenting Jesus to the world. He is the true light. The most effective way to present Jesus to the world is to do good works through love. Yes, we are required to preach the good news, but people are more likely to see the light (Jesus) through our love for them than through the message of the good news. That was evidenced on the day of Pentecost when over 3,000 souls were saved in one day, although Peter told them the good news, the primary reason why they came out of darkness is because they saw the light (Jesus) through the disciples speaking in several other languages that was the native languages of other countries. That was evidence that it was not the doing of man, but the doing of God. Similarly, Jesus saved many because he demonstrated pure, unadulterated love.
What this dark world needs is light, so be a light to the world by presenting to them Jesus who is the true light.
Present to the world the light of Jesus by demonstrating love, preaching the good news and doing works of righteousness.
Lord, May I be a light in a dark world that needs you. May I reflect Jesus by following his examples through my actions and speech. In Jesus name, amen.
