Luke 1:18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

You are not God, so do not try to play God. We often make the mistake of trying to figure out by ourselves how a difficult matter will work out even after God has spoken a word about the matter. It is a mistake because our responsibility is to believe the word of God and not to figure out the “how”. Regardless of how impossible the circumstance may look, if God has spoken a word about that situation it becomes His responsibility to bring it to pass.  By trying to figure out the “how”, we are effectively playing God and taking on a responsibility that was never given to us.

Zacharias made the mistake of trying to figure out the “how” and lost his speech for a season. After the angel Gabriel brought the good news that his wife Elizabeth would bring forth a child when she was old. Zacharias’ response to that was to ask how that was going to happen given that he and his wife were old. What his question revealed was that he doubted the word of God because he could not wrap his mind around how it would all come together given their current limitation. As a result, he was made dumb until after his wife gave birth to their miracle. It could have been that he was made dumb, to prevent him from speaking anymore doubt into the situation.  Unlike Zacharias, Mary chose to believe the angel when she got the good news of the pending birth of Jesus. She said “be it unto me according to thy word” and even though Mary asked “How this shall be, seeing I know not a man?” She asked that question already believing the word of God and only asked the question to understand God’s plan for doing what He said He would do so that she could work with His plan.

Take a different approach in responding to the word of God, rather than trying to figure out how or responding with doubt, choose to believe and do what He has spoken.

Life Application: Choose to believe what God has spoken concerning your circumstance and gain understanding from Him about His plan so that you can work with and not against His plan.

Prayer: Lord, I believe your words concerning me. I leave everything in your capable hands and trust you to take care of everything. In Jesus name, amen.
