Respond with Faith, Not Fear

Daily Devotional

Luke 8:24-25 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. And he said unto them, Where is your faith?

Why did Jesus chide his disciples after they responded with fear during the storm that came against them while He was asleep on the ship? The circumstance that they faced was understandably difficult as the ship was at that point filled with water and being tossed by the waves. Nevertheless, Jesus asked them, “Where is your faith?” It was to show that responding with fear displeases God. Fear displeases God because fear is not of God, 2 Timothy 1:7 confirms this, it says “for God has not given us a spirit of fear”. Therefore, we can conclude from this that God expects us to respond with faith and not fear in the midst of our storms.

Learning from the experience of Jesus and his disciples, there are two ways that we can choose to respond with faith. The first is to choose to believe the word of God over our circumstances. Jesus had told his disciples that they were going to go over to the other side; there was no way that a storm was going to stop that from happening because that was the word of God, it must come to pass. Although the storm was blowing, the disciples needed to keep believing that they would get to the other side as Jesus had said. The second way that we can respond to storms in our life is to command things that are contrary to what God said to come into alignment. Jesus set that example for us. He had said they were going to go to the other side and the storm came in the way, so he commanded the wind and the waves to be still. What he was doing was to command them to come into alignment with the will of God. When you are in the will of God, you can command things to come into alignment to His will and expect it to happen.

What is the storm that is raging in your life? You can overcome it by choosing a faith response. Fear will only make the matter worse.

Life Application: Choose to respond by faith by believing the word of God despite the circumstance and command things that have gone contrary to the word of God to be so aligned.

Prayer: Lord, you have not given me a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. I choose to walk in faith and not fear regardless of my circumstances. In Jesus name, amen.
