The fifth of seven (7) things that God accomplished for on the cross
Ephesians 2:12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise,
In Genesis 17:2 God said to Abraham “I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generation for an everlasting covenant to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee”. Careful observation of the scripture reveals that there were only three parties to the old covenant – God, Abraham, and Abraham’s descendants, that meant that if you were not born a direct descendant of Abraham you would not have been a heir to the promises made by God under that covenant. If you think about it, there is no basis on which anyone can lay claim to the rights under an agreement that they were not party to. It is with that in mind why Paul said in Ephesians 2:12 that we were “strangers from the covenant of promise’” Paul said that to mean that we were not party to that agreement and therefore not a beneficiary to the promises. But, thanks be to God that Jesus changed that when he went to the cross.
God orchestrated the change through the shed blood of Jesus that instituted the new covenant. Under this new covenant, any person who believes in Jesus Christ the same becomes Abraham’s seed and heirs to all the promises God made to Abraham. This is amazing. Just think about what God did for a minute: by believing in Jesus, who is the seed of Abraham, we become Abraham’s seed and by being Abraham seed we are automatic heirs of all the promises God made to Abraham and his seed. Galatians 3:29 confirms this truth when it says “and if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
The signifying mark of a believer is that you have made the Lord of creation your God and King and because you have chosen to do such you are the seed of Abraham and heir to the promises. As a result, not only then are you a beneficiary of eternal life but also all the blessings God promised to Abraham and his seed.
Life Application: Live in expectation to receive the blessings promised to Abraham and His seed even as you make Him your God by keeping His commandments.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the new covenant that you have given through your son Jesus Christ on the cross. Thank you that we are joint heirs with Jesus and have the rights to the promises that you have given unto Abraham and his descendants. In Jesus’ name, amen.
