My House Shall be Called a House of Prayer

Daily Devotional

Luke 19:46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

The Church was never intended to be what we say it should be. It belongs to God. It is because we have done it this way that many come to church and leave the same way they came. The only solution is to let God have His church back by allowing the church to be what God’s word says it should be.

God’s word says in Luke 19:46 that his house should be called a house of prayer. Let it be just that. The reason He mandated that His house should be called a house of prayer is because the most important thing that can happen at church is for us to meet with God or have encounters with Him. You will agree with me that it is only when God shows up, that we see healing, deliverance and salvation flowing in our church services. Why then not do whatever it takes for us to have encounters with Him? Making His house a house of prayer is what it takes. When the early church prayed in Acts 4:31, they had a most powerful encounter with God; the scripture says that the place shook where they were and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost again. The Church can be like that again but God must have His church back.

The mistake that we make now is that we fill our church services with many different activities and forsake the one that is most important – prayer. Prayer is most important so make it a priority. That was one thing Jesus was communicating when He declared, “my house shall be called a house of prayer”.  Consuming our church services with other less important activities is not making prayer priority. It is synonymous to what was being done in the days of Jesus where selling in temple became a dominant activity to the extent that it hindered prayer. It was an obstacle to prayer as those who would come to the temple to pray could not do so because the selling that was taking place acted as a distraction.  It was therefore important for Jesus to reestablish what church really was about – it is a place to meet with God.

Life Application: Giving God control of His church, can be accomplished by setting aside more time in our church services for spirit led praying. Therefore, meeting with God will become the norm and not the exception.

Prayer: Lord, you have declared how you envision your house. Have complete control in the church and lead mankind to a place of complete surrender to you. In Jesus name, amen.
