Luke 8:22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
“What manner of a man is this that even the winds and the waves obey him” are the famous words spoken by the disciples of Jesus after he rebuked the wind and the waves in Luke 8:25. Their response revealed that they did not see Jesus for who He really is. They saw him as just another man. It was because that was the case they used the phrase “what manner of a man”. How they saw Jesus was how they referred to Him. The same thing manifested itself when Jesus asked his disciples in Matthew 16:13 “whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” They said John the Baptist, Elias or one of the prophets. What the scripture is telling us is that the majority saw Jesus as just another man, not God. Because Peter saw Him as more than just another man, He said of Jesus “thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God ” in Luke 9:20. It is critical that we see Jesus for who He really is as how you see Jesus will determine how you respond to the storms that you face in your life.
Drawing from the story of the disciples in the ship with Jesus, there are two ways in which our responses would be different when we see Jesus for who He really is. First, when faced with storms we would respond with faith and not fear. The disciples were fearful when they saw the wind and the waves, because they thought that the person who was with them was just another man. With that perspective, they placed limits on what He could do which gave rise to fear. Faith will rise when we see Jesus for who he is.
Second, seeing Jesus for who He really is will cause us to recognize the power and authority that we have. Being a disciple of Jesus means more than just you being a follower of Jesus, the spirit of Jesus is also living in you, that means that the same power and authority that He exercises, you too can exercise. With the right perspective of Jesus, you will realize that in the same way that He rebuked the wind and waves, you can rebuke the storms that may arise in your life.
Carrying the wrong perspective of Jesus is unhealthy, see Him for who He really is.
Life Application: See Jesus for who He really is, by expanding your knowledge of the word of God. John 1:1 tells us that He is the word.
Prayer: Lord, I see you as God, omnipotent, sovereign, Almighty and the great I am that I am. Because you are God, nothing is impossible with you. May I never lose sight of who you are during the most difficult times of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
