Get Someone to Walk with You

Luke 23:26: And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross.

Most of us like the idea of being independent, but it was never God’s will for us to try to fulfill our promise or purpose alone. That was made clear when God said in Genesis 2:18 that it is not good for a man to be alone. The application of this scripture extends beyond marriage to include every facet of life. 

Jesus exemplified this principle in how he carried out his ministry; He never tried to do it alone. Shortly, after His ministry started Jesus deliberately appointed 12 disciples; he got people to walk with Him. Also, when Jesus was on the journey to the place where he would be crucified, He did not do it alone. He needed help to carry the cross and was not in a position to ask someone to walk with Him, so the Father made provision so that He would not have to do it alone. Whether it happens by choice or divine provision, see the importance of not trying to do it all alone.

There are two reasons it is important to get people to walk with you, whatever your pursuits. For starters, a decision to not do it alone lightens the load. The most conservative estimate of the weight of Jesus’ cross was 75 pounds to 125 pounds. Imagine what it would have been for Him after he had been lashed about 39 times to then turn around and carry his own cross. That would have been too much so Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross for Him significantly lightened his load.

Another reason it is important not to do it alone is that walking with someone else positions you to accomplish more. By virtue of appointing the 12 disciples, what Jesus was able to accomplish extended beyond his time on earth. His disciples created a multiplication effect that He could not physically accomplish on his own.

The life of Jesus is a picture of what is possible in the fulfillment of your purpose and promise when you choose not to do it alone.

Life Application: Identify and enlist people who can walk with you to fulfill your purpose or promise. But choose wisely because not every company is good company.
