2 Kings 2:9-10 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
Never believe that your future accomplishments are limited by what others have achieved in the past; you can reach for more. Elijah was one of the great prophets of the Bible. Not only did he have a prophetic voice, he also wrought about 16 miracles including raising the son of the widow of Zarephath from the dead. Most of us would have been satisfied just being able to replicate what Elijah did, but not Elisha. When he was asked by Elijah to tell him what he wanted him to do for him before he was taken up into heaven, his response was that he wanted a double portion of his anointing. Elisha was not content with just being able to do what Elijah did. He wanted to do that plus more. The moral of the story is to never limit your planned future achievements to only what was done in the past. You must be willing to reach for more; that was what Elijah did.
Based on Elijah’s response to Elisha there are two things that are needful to walk in the double portion anointing. The first is you have to be willing to make the necessary sacrifice. Elijah said to Elisha “You have requested a difficult thing,” The double portion anointing is a difficult thing because the greater the anointing, the greater the sacrifice required to walk therein. It is not enough to want a double portion anointing; you have to be willing to do what it takes to get it. The second requirement is to fix your focus firmly on God. After the request, Elijah told Elisha, “If you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours”. That was a condition to receiving the double portion: He had to see Elijah. Since Elijah was a representative of God, the principle being taught is that if we are to see the double portion of the anointing our gaze has to be fixed on God, it will not happen otherwise.
It is one thing to want more, all of us want that, getting to more requires being willing to do what it takes to firmly fix your eyes on Jesus.
Life Application: Experience the double portion anointing by making the necessary sacrifice to set your eyes completely on Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, I will not be limited by my past accomplishments. Give me more of your anointing. In Jesus name, amen.
