1 Kings 18:42-43 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
One reason we might experience delays in receiving what God has promised is because we have not yet mastered the art of receiving His promises. That was certainly the experience of the Children of Israel. It was God’s plan for them to get to Canaan in 2 years, but it took them 40 years.
There are four principles that we can learn from Elijah to help us to get better at receiving what God has promised. The first principle is to do as you have been told. After 3 years of drought, God told Elijah to go show himself to King Ahab and He would send rain on the land. Elijah did not vary from what God told him; he did just that.
Principle number two (2) is to go up higher. You will not get to the promise by being the same person you have always been. You must go higher physically or spiritually. After declaring that he heard the sounds of the abundance of rain the next thing that Elijah did was to go to the top of Mount Carmel. He refused to stay at the same level. It should be observed that before the Israelites possessed their promised land they had to first overcome doubt, they too went up higher.
The third principle is to pray until it is God’s perfect timing. Not because God has promised something concerning your life means that you will see the manifestation the first or second time that you pray. Elijah had to pray seven (7) times for what God had promised. By Elijah praying seven-times, what the scripture is teaching is that we must be willing to pray until it is God’s perfect timing for us to receive His promise.
The final principle is to pray with expectation. Throughout the seven times that Elijah prayed he sent his servant each time to look to see if rain clouds had started to form. The reason He did this was because he had an expectation that he would see what he was praying for. So he kept praying and looking until what he was praying for manifested itself.
Make a conscious effort to get better at receiving what God has promised. It will accelerate the flow of God’s promises into your life.
Life Application: Master the art of receiving the promises of God by doing what you are told. Identify and eliminate weaknesses that have held you back for years. And pray with expectation until it is God’s time for you to receive what he has promised.
Prayer: Lord, help me to master the art of receiving what you have promised. In Jesus name, amen.
