John 4:50-51 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.

The nobleman or royal official spoken of in John 4:50 had believed the words of Jesus although he did not see anything happening. His son was at the point of death, so he travelled 20 or more miles from Capernaum to Galilee for Jesus to handle the matter. When he reached Jesus he implored Jesus to come to his house to heal his son. Jesus in response said to him, except ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe.  What Jesus was addressing was the fact that he was one of those who needed to see something happen before he believed. He did not get what Jesus was saying initially, so he repeated his request for Jesus to come and heal his son who was at the point of death. Rather than going with him Jesus challenged him to believe the unseen by saying to him “go thy way thy son liveth”. Immediately the man chose to believe the words of Jesus even though at that point he did not see anything happen. Because he did, his son lived.

The initial attitude of the royal official mirrors that of some of us in that we have to see something happening before we believe. However, that is not faith. Faith is present when we believe the word of God even though there is no evidence that what He has said will come to pass. One of the characteristics of faith spoken about in Hebrews 11:1 is that of giving evidence of those things not seen.  For us to exhibit true faith, our faith must rise to that level, it is the same as speaking those things that are not as though they are. It is important to note that it was adopting this type of faith that made the difference between the life or death of the royal official’s son. Possessing this type of faith could make the difference between the life or death of something in our lives. Choose to believe the word of God regardless of what we see happening around you. There is no reason for you to doubt the word God; whatever He says will come to pass.

Life Application: Raise the level of your faith to the point where you believe the word of God even if it seems like nothing is happening.

Prayer: Lord. I believe in you and I put my trust in you. Help me keep my faith even in the most difficult times of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
