Talk to God Before You Talk to Man

Daily Devotional

Nehemiah 1:11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.

Since God is sovereign, which means that nothing happens unless He permits it, would it not be better to talk to Him before you talk to anyone else? At the end of the day, it is not what man says that goes; it is what He says.

Nehemiah wore many hats, but at his core he was an intercessor and being such he understood clearly that in order to unlock his vision and purpose, he must talk to God before talking to men. In Nehemiah 1 when he learnt that the walls of Jerusalem remained broken, he knew instantly that he would need the help of King Artaxerxes to affect the situation in a meaningful way. Nevertheless, he never ran to the King the first chance that he got, instead he spent many days in fasting and prayer before he finally spoke to the King. Additionally, he timed his conversation with the King to be at the point when the King was ready to receive what he had to say. The clue for him that the King was at that point was when the King asked why his countenance was the way it was. In totality there was a 3 to 4 months lapse between when the matter came to his attention and him speaking to the King. After he had the initial conversation with the King, the King asked him what his request was. Rather than giving the King his response promptly, according to Nehemiah 2:4 he went back to ask God what he should ask for before laying down what he wanted before the King. Because his requests were God directed, the King gave him all that he asked for.

It pays to talk to God first before talking to men. Esther did that too and turned around the desperate situation of the Jews in Shushan. The benefit of talking to God first is that of getting wisdom. It is important to get the strength, wisdom and favor needed to turn the situation around.

Life Application: Present your situation to God through earnest prayer and fasting over a period of days or months before seeking the cooperation of man in the execution of your vision.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us access to you so that we can present any matter to you. May I seek you first before consulting men. In Jesus’ name, amen.
