Psalms 115:4-6 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

We often say that there is none like our God (Jehovah), but rarely pause long enough to recognize the extent to which that is the case. Psalms 115 gives 7 reasons why there is no comparison between our God and other gods. The first was stated in verse 4. It says “their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. What the Psalmist was saying was that the existence of all these other gods is dependent on someone else; this includes other figures that are worshipped as God to include Muhammad and Haile Selassie. They only existed because our God created them or they are created by human hands. In contrast, our God is self-existent: his existence does not depend on the existence of any other being.  How is it possible for anyone or anything to be God but need another being to create them?

The other attributes of other gods that were mentioned in Psalms 115 was that they had mouths but they cannot speak, eyes but they cannot see, ears but they cannot hear, nose but they cannot smell, hands but they cannot handle and feet but they cannot walk. The essence of the point that was being made was that these other gods are completely powerless, compared to our God who is all powerful and can do far more than we can think or imagine. Consider also that since these other gods cannot see, hear or speak that means they are unaware of what is happening in our lives and have no ability to hear or answer our prayers.  Given this context it was ludicrous for prophets of Baal to have expected Baal to send fire from heaven when they were challenged on Mount Carmel by Elijah. We know how that ended, the only God that was able to answer by fire was our God.

The fact that there is none like Him was true yesterday and will remain true today and continue to be true tomorrow. It is a truth that will not change. The implication is that rather than put your confidence in any other God, put your trust and belief in Him.

Life Application: Now that you are fully aware as to why there is none like our God, do what Proverbs 3:5 says and trust him with all of thy heart.

Prayer: Lord, you are the only true God. There is none like you and none that we can compare to you. All other gods are the works of men. So Lord, we praise you and honor you because you are supreme and the great I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.
