8 Things That God Has Been to Us

Psalms 18:2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

When God declared himself in Exodus 3:14 as the “I am that I am”. One implication of that is that he is everything that we need Him to be. The Psalmist enunciated in Psalms 18:2, 8 things that God was to him; to us today he has been these 8 things and more.

The first thing that the Psalmist mentioned was that the Lord is my rock. As our rock, he is a sure foundation: if we build our lives on his laws and principles we cannot go wrong. 

The second thing he stated was that the Lord was his fortress or refuge. When all hell is breaking loose around us, we can get comfort by hiding ourselves in him. 

The Lord is my deliverer was the third thing he highlighted. Being our deliverer God consistently makes a way where there is no way. One of the many times that He did that was when he turned the water in wine at the wedding feast (John 2). 

The fourth thing noted by the Psalmist is that He is my God. As our God, let him reign over every area of your life.  

God is my strength is the fifth thing that the Psalmist emphasized. Being our strength, God gives us the power and might to walk into victory. As an example when Samson lost his strength, he asked God to strengthen him one more time (Judges 16:28). 

The sixth thing put forward by the Psalmist was that He is my buckler or shield. As our shield he is our defense; that was symbolized by the cloud of the Spirit moving from before the Children of Israel to behind them as Pharaoh’s army approached.  

The Psalmist also referred to God as the horn of my salvation. Regardless of how wretched we might be, our salvation comes from him. Rahab was a harlot, but she and her house were saved. 

The eighth thing that God is to us is a high tower. The purpose of a high tower is to protect and that is what God is to us. He puts a hedge round about His people when we abide in Him.

God is all encompassing God, he is not only the above 8 things to us, he is all those and more. Keep holding unto him.

Life Application: Given all that God has been to you, make a covenant to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being an all encompassing God. Everything I need and will ever need is found in you. Thank you for being my God, protector, healer, strong tower and much more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
