Surround Yourself With The Right People

Daily Devotional

Judges 1:3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

One of the traits that we should look for in those we take with us into spiritual battles is that when they cry to God, He hears their cry. It is a lesson taught by the scripture in Judges 1:3. After the death of Joshua, the Children of Israel enquired of the Lord, asking who should go up first against the Canaanites to possess the remaining land; the Lord told them that Judah should go up first. Nevertheless, Judah asked Simeon to accompany them. There are two lessons that we can learn from the approach taken by Judah in that battle.

The first lesson that we can learn is to never go into battle alone. The tribe of Judah asked the tribe of Simeon to accompany them; it was based on the understanding that there is strength in numbers.  Jesus taught this same principle in Matthew 18:19 when he said: “that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven”. What Jesus was effectively saying was that more can be accomplished when we have one (1) or more people agreeing with us in prayer. The takeaway from this however is that  we must identify like minded people to help us pray about and confront the circumstances that we face.

Second, when you are going into battle it is best to go with people who when they pray, God hears. There were 10 other tribes that Judah could have asked to go with them.  Why did Judah choose Simeon to accompany them? The name Simeon means the Lord hears; they chose Simeon because they wanted to go into battle with people who could get the attention of God when they prayed. If we mimic this approach, we will be better positioned to receive God’s power and wisdom in our situation. When the Philistines attacked the Israelites at Mizpeh in 1 Samuel 7; 9-10, Samuel’s presence made a huge difference to the outcome of the battle. The scripture said that “Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard him”.  The Lord thundered with a great thunder against the Philistines and they being fearful were defeated by the Israelites.

You are better positioned to get the results that you want when you partner with people who get God’s attention when they pray.

Life Application:  Identify and align yourself with people who God hears when they speak.

Prayer: Lord, surround me with people who get your attention in prayer. Show me and allow me to choose the right people to go with me in battle. In Jesus’ name, amen.
