Revelation 2:3-4 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
Is God still your first love? It is easy to say “yes”, but if that is your answer are your actions so aligned? If the Church at Ephesus was asked the same question they may have thought that they had grounds on which to say yes. After all, they were commended for their labour in the Kingdom of God and patience during the times of difficulties. Additionally, they were also recognized for their ability to discern between those who were true apostles and those who were not. Despite their credentials, they were charged by God for forsaking their first love. God judged their first love by their actions: what they were doing then relative to what they did when they first began.
Based on the foregoing, to answer the question, is God still your first love? The real question that you must ask yourselves is if you possess the same passion and commitment for following the word of God as you did when you just began your walk with the Lord? Where this is concerned, the church at Ephesus was found wanting. As a result, there were 3 instructions that God gave to them. First, remember from whence thou hast fallen; in other words, recall where you were in God and assess where are right now.
Is your spiritual fire still burning bright? If the answer is no, the second instruction is to repent by rekindling the passion and commitment that you once had for God and His words.
The third instruction is to do the first works. The true evidence that repentance has taken place is that we get back to a place where we are doing the same or more of what we used to do when we just started our walk with God.
God must be our first love. When He does not occupy that position it is because we have put other things above. If you have faltered in this way, restore God to the first love position.
Life Application; Restore God to the first love position by recalling where you are now relative to where you were in your relationship with God. If you have fallen short, repent and do your first works again.
Prayer: Lord, you are my first love but I have not always kept you there. Rekindle that fire I had when I first received you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
