Isaiah 6:1-3 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims…And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
God is the epitome of awesome. Hearing His voice is awesome, it brings joy, clarity and comfort. The manifestation of His power that, among other things, raises the dead is awesome. His knowledge is awesome; he knows the number of the stars and each by name. God’s love is awesome; He sacrificed his one son for us. The righteousness of God is awesome, so much so that when the angels see Him all they can say is holy, holy, holy.
In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the awesomeness of God as stated in Isaiah 6:1-3. He mentioned two characteristics of God that make him awesome. The first is that He saw God high and lifted up. One implication of God being high and lifted is that whatever He does is far better than anyone else; that makes Him awesome. A key reason God can operate in this way is because his thoughts and ways are higher, so whatever he does will be higher or better than anyone else.
The second thing that Isaiah saw that is worth mentioning is that God’s train filled the temple. Typically at weddings we see bride’s with trains that are sometimes several feet long, but here God’s train filled the temple. So that you get a mental picture of what Isaiah was talking about, the temple that Solomon built was 180 feet long, 90 feet wide, and 50 feet high yet God’s train filled it all – length, width and height. What does that tell us about the awesomeness of God? It says that God does nothing ordinary. It is an example for us to follow.
If you doubt the awesomeness of God, you only need to look at creation. The angels tell us that the whole earth is filled with His glory; that means you do not need to look far to see the awesomeness of God. Consider how God in his intricate wisdom fashioned the womb of a woman so that a child can survive and be nurtured for 9 months. Just thinking about that should cause you to say that God is awesome.
Life Application: Praise God continually for His awesomeness and like Isaiah declare His awesomeness to others.
Prayer: Lord, you are awesome. We stand in awe of how great you are. May we praise you for your awesomeness everyday. In Jesus’ name, amen.
