Create Change with the Word of God

Daily Devotional

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

While other things will fail, the word of God will not; it will create change in any situation. There are attributes of the word of God mentioned in Hebrews 4:12 that guarantee that it will create change.  First, it is quick. When the word of God is applied, it can create change in an instant. In creation, darkness disappeared as soon as God said let there be light, and Lazarus came up out of the tomb the moment that Jesus said Lazarus come forth.

The second attribute of the word of God is that it comes with power. When Peter spoke the word of God to the lame man in Acts 3, to rise up and walk, Peter took him by the hand and his knees and ankle gained strength. That was the work of the word of God. It has power.

The third thing mentioned is that it is sharper than any two-edged sword. What the scripture wanted us to know was that the word of God can do much more than a two-edged sword can do. One of those things that was highlighted by the scripture was that it could reach and pierce even the spirit of man, that is not something that a sword could ever accomplish.

Finally, the word of God was noted as having the capability to discern the thoughts and intents of man. When the scribes were thinking within themselves that Jesus had blasphemed, because he said he had power on earth to forgive sins, Jesus discerned their thoughts and asked them in Matthew 9:4 “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts”. Jesus, who is the word of God, can discern the thoughts and intents of man.

Given these 4 characteristics of the word of God, the best way to bring change to your situation is to use it. Start today to place greater reliance on the word of God to bring change to your situation.

Life Application: Create change with the word of God by deliberately responding to every situation with either a biblical principle or an instruction given by the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your word that brings power and change. May I use it in the manner it should be used to bring forth change. In Jesus’ name, amen.
