Let The Word of God Be Your Only Standard

Daily Devotional

Matthew 4:4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

It is not everything that sounds good you should go along with. When Satan told Jesus to turn the stones into bread, the suggestion sounded like a good one. After fasting for forty (40) Days, Jesus was hungry so having some bread on hand would have been ideal to address His hunger. Furthermore, since at that point Jesus had not yet worked many miracles, the wilderness was a good place to further develop His skills. Although, there were plausible reasons as to why Jesus should have turned the stone into bread, he refused to go along with it. Instead, he responded by saying “it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”

Why did Jesus respond to the Devil the way in which He did? What was He communicating by letting Satan know that man must live by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Jesus was informing Satan that the only standard that He lived by is the word of God. On that basis, unless what He was suggesting was the word of God He would not go along with it. Adam and Eve had taken a different approach and fell for the deception of the serpent; clearly their approach never worked. The only approach that has proven to work is the one that Jesus took. Let the word of God be your only standard. With that approach it is no longer about if a suggestion sounds plausible, the bigger question will always be, is it consistent with the word of God? If the answer is “no” then refuse to go with it.

Life Application: Let the word of God be truly your only standard by basing every decision and action on what the word of God has said.

Prayer: Lord, May I abide by your word at all times even when it is difficult to do so. I will let your word guide me in all things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
