Expect God to Be Who He Has Always Been

Daily Devotional

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

While different aspects of a person may change, God will never change. As humans, our word may change: we may have to retract a promise that was made yesterday. Our character or value system may change; some of us do not hold true today to moral values that were taught to us when you were a child.  Our physical conditioning may change, as we grow older it is expected that our physical strength will decline. Lastly, our competence may change; our ability to do things that we were able to do in the past may now be totally compromised. Despite all these ways that we may change, God will not change. James 1:17 said of God that in him there is no variableness or shadow of turning.  What James was communicating to us is that it is not possible for God to change. The same God that He was yesterday is the same God that He will be today and forever.

There are two implications of the fact that there is no variability with God. First, because there is no variability with God, we can trust Him to be who He has always been. If it was possible for God to change, we would not know what to expect; His credibility would be questioned.

Second, because it is not possible for God to change, his ability to deliver will never be diminished by the difficulty of our circumstance. It is this invariability in the power of God that resulted in triumph at the Red Sea and at the Jericho Wall; those were two impossible situations.

Because your current situation does not change who God is, expect Him to show up all the time.

Life Application: Since it is not possible for God to change, face every situation with faith that you have the victory.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being an immutable God. I can rest assured that you will do what you say you will because you are the God who is the same yesterday, today and forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
