Reflect on All The Ways God Has Been Keeping You

Daily Devotional

Deuteronomy 29:5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.

Never lose sight of all the ways in which God has kept you. Although the Children of Israel were no longer in Egypt, they expected to enjoy the same comforts that they experienced while they were in Egypt, and it was just not possible as they were in a different stage in their existence. Their response to it was to complain; in Numbers 11:5 they talked about the fish, cucumbers, melons, onions, and garlic they enjoyed in Egypt to make the comparison that all they had then was manna, that would fall from heaven. They complained because they lost sight of all the ways that God had kept them.

In Deuteronomy 29:5 God reminded them of two ways in which He had kept them throughout their 40 years in the wilderness. The first thing that he brought back to their attention was that their clothes never waxed old. They wore the same clothes for 40 years, but the clothes looked as new as they did when they started their journey. Imagine that. If that was not enough, God also reminded them that their shoes did not wax old either. How was it possible to wear the same pair of shoes in the wilderness for 40 years and it did not give way? These days it is hard to keep a pair of shoes for more than 3 year.  That was nothing but a miracle. However, it never crossed the minds of the Children of Israel because they were busy looking at what they did not have, rather than expressing gratitude to God for the ways in which he had kept them. Being in the wilderness, if their clothes and shoes had worn out, what would they have done?

Right now, you might not have all things at your disposal that you might have wanted to have at this stage of your life, but give thanks. God has kept you and your family. He may have kept you and your family in good health, so that you avoid large medical expenses. Give thanks. Even though you might not have had it in abundance, God has always shown up when the bills are due and provided for you in ways you could not have imagined. It is a good time to reflect on all the ways that God has been keeping you and give thanks.

Life Application: Reflect on all the ways that God has been keeping you by making a list of all the ways that God has kept you from spending unnecessarily or provided resources for you that you would not have otherwise had. Then when you are done give God thanks.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your goodness towards me. You have protected me all these years, you have blessed me beyond comprehension and you have been a great father in every sense of the word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
