Genesis 11:6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
It takes unity and cooperation to get great things done; that was one of the lessons that should be learnt from the story of the Tower of Babel. In the story recorded in Genesis 11, it was noticeable that the people reached as far as they did because they were united. They had a lofty goal to build a tower, whose top reached to the heavens. When God came down and observed their activity they possessed two characteristics. Firstly, the scripture said “the people are one”; that means they were united, having the same focus and intent. Because everyone was pulling in the same direction they moved quickly as there was no resistance to them moving ahead quickly.
The second characteristic of the people was that they all had one language: they had a single voice. It shows agreement, and great power is unleashed when we agree around a single purpose, that was what the people of Babel did.
Try to find common ground with those who you are working with, whether it is in ministry or at work or at home or at school. Unity and agreement is a powerful tool that can be used to get great things done. Because the people were united at Babel the conclusion that God drew concerning them was that nothing will stop them from accomplishing what they had imagined to do. Think about that for a moment, it means that nothing can stop your imaginations from becoming real when there is unity around a common purpose. It took God to stop the people of Babel; how he stopped them was by creating division among them by causing them to speak different languages. Division can cause all that you have worked for to come to naught, so stay united.
Life Application: Get great things done by identifying like minded people who you can work with and agree with around a single purpose.
Prayer: Lord, help us a church and as people who are endeavoring to please you, to be united around the same purpose. In Jesus’ name, amen.
