Give God Thanks In Every Situation

Daily Devotional

1 Thessalonians  5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

What is meant in 1 Thessalonians  5:18 when it says “ in everything give thanks”? One implication of the scripture is to give God thanks in good times or bad. A failure to give God thanks during the dark seasons is a failure to see God’s handy work during those times. God does not just work on our behalf in the good times, He does the same in the bad times as well.

Ask Jonah, he had first hand knowledge of this. In Jonah 2:9 when he was in the belly of the whale, he repented and gave thanksgiving to God and the next thing that we saw was that God spoke to the whale and it vomited up Jonah. Jonah’s deliverance was preceded by repentance and thanksgiving.

A second implication of the phrase ‘in everything give thanks’ is to make giving thanks to God a lifestyle and not just something that we do occasionally.  It is important that we make thanksgiving a lifestyle because it will keep us from forgetting the goodness of God towards us. When Jesus healed the (10) lepers in Luke 17, only one (1) returned to give Him thanks, the other nine (9) forgot to say thanks after such a significant event happened in their lives. How could that happen? They never made thanksgiving a lifestyle. When we do not make thanksgiving a lifestyle, we will easily forget what God has done and end up murmuring and complaining like the Children of Israel.

Life Application: Make giving God thanks a lifestyle by practicing to see God’s goodness in every situation and instantly express gratitude to God when He does something for you. In addition,  schedule times daily to give Him thanks.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for all that you have done in my life. Thank you for your continued guidance and protection. Thank you for your provision and for being an awesome father. In Jesus’ name, amen.
