Isaiah 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.
It is said that defense wins championships; this is not only applicable to sports but also to the game of life. Without a great defense we will always be susceptible to being defeated. Therefore, do all that is required to keep your defense intact. Our defense is intact when we make God our defense. Isaiah 59:17-19 tells us five (5) things that are required to keep our defense strong. “Put on breastplate of righteousness”; which is the same as practicing total obedience, was the first requirement that was mentioned.
The second thing noted is having on a “helmet of salvation”. We put on the helmet of salvation by continually meditating on the word of God.
The third thing that is required is to put on the garment of vengeance; we do that by living with an expectation that God will avenge us from our enemies.
Fourthly, we are required to be “clad with zeal as a cloak”; in other words, be passionate about the Lord.
The final requirement mentioned in Isaiah 59:19 is that we must “fear the name of the Lord and his glory”. The word “fear” here means to honor or revere. To truly carry out this requirement we must love the name of the Lord and His presence. What should be drawn from these five (5) requirements is that to possess a great defense there are certain disciplines that we must diligently practice.
When we practice the disciplines, God will be our defense. There are two things that the scripture suggests would happen when the Lord is your defense. Firstly, he will repay your enemies for their evil works; they will not go unpunished.
The second thing is that he will lift up a standard, which is a hedge or a wall of defense. The scripture says, “when the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.” If we wait until the enemy is attacking to put our defense in place, then it is far too late. We must have our defense intact well in advance of any attacks, Afterall, one thing is certain, the enemy will attack whether we are prepared.
Life Application: Keep your defense intact by practicing total obedience, continually thinking on the word of God, being passionate about God, expect Him to defend you and loving His name and His presence.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my defense and shield. I will do all that you require to keep my defense intact. In Jesus’ name, amen.
