Offer Only Acceptable and Sweet Worship to God

Daily Devotional

Jeremiah 6:20-21 To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me. Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.

What is the quality of your worship? Is it enough to say that you offered God your worship? He wants worship that is acceptable and sweet.  Cain’s offertory worship was not acceptable to God, it failed to meet God’s standard. Nadab and Abihu, who were the two sons of Aaron, offered worship with strange fires and were put to death because it was neither acceptable nor sweet to God. Offer only Worship that is acceptable and sweet to God.

The people of Israel and Judah were chastised for not offering acceptable and sweet worship unto God. God said in Jeremiah 6:20 that their burnt offerings are not acceptable; nor were their sacrifices sweet unto Him. Acceptable worship is worship that is consistent with the word of God, while sweet worship is worship in the spirit. It is worship that carries the fragrance of the presence of God.  In the eyes of men, their worship looked good: they brought incense from Sheba and sweet corn from a far country. Nevertheless, they were merely going through the motion; but it was not sincere. God wants authentic worship, that is what makes it acceptable. They even used incense, but the worship was not sweet because the presence of God was not there.

The failure to offer God acceptable and sweet worship comes with consequences. As a result of them continuously failing to offer true worship, God said he would lay stumbling blocks before them; literally he would hinder their progress. He did not stop there; He went further to say that the father, son, neighbor and friend would perish. Their lives would be cut short. The failure to offer acceptable and sweet worship to God can come with a heavy price. Why not just do what it takes to give quality worship to God?

Life Application: Offer acceptable and sweet worship to God by worshiping Him in Spirit and truth.

Prayer: Lord, you deserve the highest praise and adoration. Let my worship be a sweet smelling savor to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
